Ancient Monuments Society (AMS)
The Ancient Monuments Society was founded in 1924 for the study and conservation of ancient monuments, historic buildings and fine old craftsmanship. 'Ancient Monument' is taken to mean any man-made structure of architectural or historic interest - including houses, barns, almshouses, railway stations, dovecotes, churches and chapels. They advise on listed building consent in England and Wales, handling some 6,000 such cases each year, and thus play an important role in the conservation of the historic environment. They publish a 40 page Volume of 'Transactions' and three Newsletters annually.
