Why is there so much paperwork?

One of the criticisms regularly aimed at contract administration is that there are so many forms to fill in and so much paperwork generated. The truth is that there will always be some non-essential documents, but we explain the principal reasons behind the paperwork.
European legislation explained
Building designers have long been required to jump through legislative hoops in the pursuit of planning permission. But the regulatory hoop-jumping has become Olympic standard – more challenging, more complicated and far more time-consuming. BSRIA is working to unravel the spaghetti that is European energy legislation, as this article explains.
Video: Navigating legal landmarks

After the House of Lords gave its last ever judgment (in its judicial capacity) as the UK's top court in July 2009, following centuries in the role, the programme is recorded at the new UK Supreme Court, its successor. The purpose of the programme is, in a very practical sense, to look at how the salient features of the English legal system work and how to get the most out of case law.
Revisiting EU Directive 2004/18/EC
In 2007 the International Construction Information Society, of which NBS is a founding member, sent 21 questions on public procurement to the EC. We report on their response, and on the results of a survey of European specifiers.
Video: Fully Licensed? Data Licensing and Digital Rights Management

Data Licensing is complex: no one loves it, yet it's a necessity for the purchasing of any data. It's so complex that many organisations would rather ignore the issue than tackle it head on. Organisations that fail to have mechanisms in place to counter licensing problems and mitigate the risk of infringements could face prosecution. In this programme, we consider the typical problems that organisations face.
New contracts and laws titles from www.ribabookshops.com
This month we highlight a selection of new and forthcoming contract administration titles, available from the brand new RIBA Bookshops website.
The JCT 05 Standard Building Contract: Law and Administration –
Clarifies complex issues surrounding obligations and rights under the contract, making it an essential reference for construction professionals, employers, contractors, and lawyers new to construction seeking to update and consolidate their knowledge. The book also provides the knowledge and understanding of the contract, which are a fundamental part of the education of most students who go on to become managers and leaders in the construction industry. It thoroughly works through the provisions of the contract in simple language, using case law examples and relevant statute to demonstrate approaches to its interpretation.
Also from RIBA Bookshops:
Standard Building Contract (SBC05) Administration Guide – The SBC 05 Contract Administration Guide accompanies the contract administration forms for SBC05. Edited by David Chappell, the Contract Administration Guides have been fully revised to include worked examples of each of the forms with notes about their use, completion and issue. They include fully referenced checklists of the architects or contract administrators actions and duties under the contract. The guides also reproduce the articles, recitals and contract particulars from the contract, showing how they should be completed by means of worked examples.
To accompany the contract administration forms for IC/ICD05 and MW/MWD05, the popular guides to these forms have also been updated:
All books listed above are available to order from www.ribabookshops.com, from the mail order department: +44 (0) 207 256 7222 and from RIBA Bookshops in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
