Report 447 Brownfield sites: ground related risks for buildings, 2002
Presents guidance to the ground related risks to the built environment from contaminated land, including risks to: buildings, transport infrastructure, services, gardens and ancillary buildings.
Outlines a systematic means of managing the range of risks to the built environment over the lifetime of the building development. Decisions which may be required include: for foundations on a deep fill, whether to adopt a low-cost ground improvement technique in preference to piling, taking into account possible remedial costs within the design life of the building, for foundations where there is a gas migration problem, whether a passive venting system is adequate, for services in contaminated ground, the level of protection required.
Principally focused on low-rise buildings, particularly housing. It is seen as complementary to, firstly, the model procedures for the management of contaminated land being developed by DEFRA/Environment Agency and, secondly, the Environment Agency and NHBC (2000) guidance for the safe development of housing on land affected by contamination. These procedures and guidance are briefly described in the text.
Guidance is concerned with the technical aspects of building development on brownfield sites rather than with legal issues.

Special Publication SP 78 Building on derelict land, 1991
Detail guidance is given on the investigation, appraisal, remedial treatment and building on sites which have become derelict, mainly as a result of human activity. The body of the publication is in two parts; Part A outlines the basic principles and procedure of the development of derelict sites and Part B explains in detail the problems posed by derelict sites and how solutions can be approached.
The hazards of filled and contaminated sites are discussed with reference to specific industrial past uses, which may be identifiable from historical records. The initial assessment, detailed site investigation, sampling techniques and final appraisal of a derelict site are described. Remedial treatment of filled and contaminated sites is covered and design of foundations, below-ground services, roads and other paving is discussed. The value of monitoring and the importance of contractual aspects are stressed. Detailed guidance is given on matters concerning the safety of site workers and third parties.

It aims to assist risk assessors to judge whether it is appropriate to use a Soil Guideline Value as part of an assessment for a particular site, taking account of land use, contaminant type and general site conditions.
Written for technical professionals who are familiar with assessing and managing the risks to human health from land contamination but who are not necessarily experts in exposure modelling. Describes the principles of the CLEA model and specifically how it is applied to the derivation of Soil Guideline Values.
