Report 447 Brownfield sites: ground related risks for buildings, 2002
Presents guidance to the ground related risks to the built environment from contaminated land, including risks to: buildings, transport infrastructure, services, gardens and ancillary buildings. Outlines a systematic means of managing the range of risks to the built environment over the lifetime of the building development. Decisions which may be required include: for foundations on a deep fill, whether to adopt a low-cost ground improvement technique in preference to piling, taking into account possible remedial costs within the design life of the building, for foundations where there is a gas migration problem, whether a passive venting system is adequate, for services in contaminated ground, the level of protection required. Principally focused on low-rise buildings, particularly housing. It is seen as complementary to, firstly, the model procedures for the management of contaminated land being developed by DEFRA/Environment Agency and, secondly, the Environment Agency and NHBC (2000) guidance for the safe development of housing on land affected by contamination. These procedures and guidance are briefly described in the text. Guidance is concerned with the technical aspects of building development on brownfield sites rather than with legal issues.

Extreme sites: the greening of brownfield, 2004
Tackles green issues on a large scale and asks how on regenerated sites the demands of the natural ecology might be balanced with the redevelopment for human activities. In many major cities the only large tracts of land available are those made toxic through a recipe of urbanism, industry and science- from our great water thoroughfares to rubbish landfills. Thus the treatment of brownfield sites has become a pressing issue for national and local government, urban planners, developers and designers. This publication seeks an alternative in proposing an unprecedented weaving together of the naturalist and urbanist. It effectively brings together those in the vanguard of conceptualising this situation from a multiplicity of viewpoints and disciplines.

Rethinking construction - 2002, 2002
Rethinking Construction was initiated by the report of the Construction Task Force chaired by Sir John Egan in 1998. The principles are simple: Client leadership, Integrated teams throughout the delivery chain, and Respect for people. Since the publication of the report, the Rethinking Construction agenda has been taken forward through a partnership between government, clients and industry. At the heart of the Rethinking Construction initiative is the Demonstration Projects Programme. This provides the opportunity for leading edge organisations to promote projects that demonstrate innovation and change, which can be measured and evaluated. These are either site-based projects or organisational change projects. This new report looks at: How you can get involved, Working together, How widespread the initiative is across the UK, How good it is for business, The 12 KPIs demonstrated, Who's who in Rethinking Construction, and Making contact with the initiative.

Buildings, building materials and services (BBM and S) are just one of a number of different receptors that may be damaged if they come into contact with contaminated ground. These risks should be taken into account when; New buildings are to be erected on the contaminated ground, Materials are to form part of a remediation scheme, or There is reason to believe that existing structures have been adversely affected. This report considers the risks to BBM and S in four principle ways; The presence of aggressive substances, The presence of combustible materials, The presence of expansive slags, and The presence of unstable fills.

CIRIA

Publication C521 Sustainable urban drainage systems - design manual for Scotland and Northern Ireland, 2000
This manual describes current best design practice in Scotland and Northern Ireland and sets out the technical and planning considerations for designing sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) for surface water. Drainage methods inspired by natural processes are introduced, and guidance is given on how the design team should select and design a suitable system.

Publication C523 Sustainable urban drainage systems - best practice manual for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, 2001
Provides guidance on employing sustainable methods of water drainage and putting sustainable development into practice. C523 covers the wider aspects of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) best practice, addressing the legislative issues surrounding SUDS and how organisations may work together in employing SUDS. It examines issues raised about SUDS, and illustrates how SUDS can help make developments more sustainable. Should be read in conjunction with CIRIA Publication C521 or C522.

Publication C609 Sustainable drainage systems, 2004
The concept of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) is to minimise the effects and impact of urban development on waterways, namely flooding and pollution. This can be achieved through a system that tries to copy natural drainage of a site by using different techniques to treat pollution and to slow down or reduce flows. These techniques can utilise the features of vegetation to improve habitats of wildlife. The aim of this book is to summarise current knowledge, apply best practice to design and construction and to improve knowledge in the areas of hydrology, hydraulics, structural aspects, water quality and ecology of various SUDS.
