Technical Memoranda TM 37 Designing for improved solar shading control, 2006
Deals with the issue of solar overheating and the way it can be avoided by appropriate building design.
The Building Regulations Part L (2006 edition) include a requirement to limit the effects of solar gains in summer. This covers both new dwellings and new buildings that are not dwellings in England and Wales. Provides additional explanation of the solar overheating guidance in Approved Document L2A, and has been endorsed for this purpose by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM).

Natural home heating: the complete guide to renewable energy options, 2003
Offers a tour of all the available options including traditional oil and gas furnaces, wood stoves and masonry heaters, active and passive solar systems, and heat pumps. Included is a detailed review of the fuels, systems, technologies, costs, and advantages and disadvantages of each option. Pahl teaches homeowners how to retrofit existing heating systems, choose renewable replacements, or design a new house that can be heated comfortably with minimal environmental and financial impact.
Council for National Parks
Briefing Paper Renewable energy and energy efficiency, 2006
Discusses the efforts of national parks to ameliorate climate change, touching on how renewable energy can be sensitively developed in sensitive environments such as national parks.

Building with reclaimed components and materials: a design handbook for reuse and recycling, 2006
Addresses the opportunities at the design stage of a project for minimising the generation of waste by the use of recycled components and materials in buildings. It reviews current experience of designing with recycling in mind, the processes by which components and material can be reclaimed and the opportunities for specifying them in construction work.

Planning and installing bioenergy systems: a guide for installers, architects and engineers, 2006
Bioenergy is relied upon worldwide as a modern solution for local energy supply and waste management. Including clear technical details, data tables and illustrative pictures explaining the fundamentals of different bioenergy projects, this guide reviews the main technologies and offers relevant best-practice examples. Beginning with an overview of the technologies and types of system available, each technology is explained by examining the overall system and its components, planning, operation, maintenance, installation and economics.

Off the grid: modern homes and alternative energy, 2005
Confronts the ecological and cultural problems associated with the way we get and use energy, and explains how it is possible to live in a beautifully designed home using much less. Technologies that can be used to live off the grid (geothermal energy use, wind turbines, photovoltaic arrays, micro hydropower, rainwater collection and reclamation, and more) are explained as author Lori Ryker shows how to choose and incorporate these sources according to geography and climate. Shows how we can take responsibility for our future choices and conveniences now, and proves that off-the-grid living is a concept that can be easily understood and adopted by everyone, regardless of where you live or how much money you make.

National Assembly for Wales
Technical Advice Notes (Wales) 8 Planning for renewable energy, 2005
The Welsh Assembly Government has set a target of 4TWh to be produced by renewable energy in order to meet the UK national target of producing 10% of its electrical power production by 2010. This draft TAN considers current production, the capacity required to hit renewable energy targets, and specific issues for a range of available technologies. It is aimed primarily at local planning authorities, but will also be of interest to developers, Government agencies, environmental groups and members of the public.

Renewable energy resources, 2005
Every country in the world is seeking new energy sources as alternatives to fossil fuels. For the best use of such resources, we need to know how much is available, what the limitations are and how to make efficient devices which will harness the energy in a practical, cost-effective way. This book gives quantitative answers to these questions, using basic alternatives and specialized engineering treatises.
Welsh Office
Technical Advice Notes (Wales) 8 Renewable energy, 1996
This note covers the consideration that should be given to renewable energy projects. Renewable energy covers those energy flows that occur naturally and repeatedly in the environment. The main advantages of using renewable energy are the substitution of valuable energy sources of finite supply, and the limiting of emissions of greenhouse gases.
