Sustainable development process: a framework for effective strategies, decision-making and action, 1994
This paper aims to establish that the following points are important in an appreciation of sustainable development; it is a process rather than a single system or product; sustainability results from the interaction of several related systems: values, symbiotic technologies and scale of activities; if outputs from one of these component systems are used as measures or indicators of sustainability, they can only be meaningful if related to the appropriate inputs in that or another of the three component systems; sustainable yield is value-free whereas sustainable development is value-laden; and as it is value-laden, sustainable development can only be managed through careful attention to and use of participative environmental decision-making processes.

Intended to make a positive contribution to the quest for sustainable development. Schumacher Briefing 8 Bioregional solutions: for living on one planet, 2002
The bioregional approach thinks globally and acts locally. From this arose the UK's largest eco-village: Bedzed (Beddington Zero Energy Development). Central to Bedzed is the notion of Ecological Footprinting or FEET Index, (Foreign Exchange Earned per Tonne of Transport CO2) whose aim is to minimise the environmental damage of long-distance trade. New technologies incorporated into the scheme include a small-scale waste wood-fired power plant, a paper production and recycling scheme and a way of developing textiles from hemp.

Architecture of empowerment: people, shelter and liveable cities, 1997
In the wake of the second Habitat Conference, and with the urban population of the developing world set to treble in the next generation, Ismail Serageldin argues that architecture must both widen its scope and reassess its processes in order to address the needs of the poor. He emphasises that the provision of shelter and infrastructure is most effective when undertaken in close collaboration with the community - from concept design through to construction - and as part of a broader socioeconomic strategy.

HOK guidebook to sustainable design, 2000
Sustainable design is the practice of considering the environmental, economic and cultural impact of modern building practices when planning the design of a structure or site. In architectural terms this includes everything from closely monitoring the materials used in building and site construction in order to avoid toxic, rare or polluting products, to providing ease of conversion, demolition and recycling once the structure has outlived its usefulness Architecture, real estate and construction industries are beginning to realise that it is not just environmentally responsible to build sustainably, but also financially rewarding. The market for this technology will grow as it becomes less expensive and its practices become further integrated. Details over 25 international HOK projects in which sustainability was a central concern. It focuses not only on each project's environmental considerations, but presents the technicalities and intricacies, including material selection, site preparation, resource conservation, sustainable energy usage, demolition and recycling.

Examines the need for establishing a universal framework for assessing the sustainability of a place, a framework that could be used for any place, in any part of the world. Using two case studies of two towns (San Gimignano, Italy, and Ludlow, England) as a backdrop, the book examines their distinctive features and develops a framework for assessing their energy and environmental capabilities in light of their social, economic, political, and cultural prerequisites. Discusses key aspects of sustainability such as: geological formation, climate, external dependencies, communication and infrastructure, historical heritage, community, and permanence of population.

Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution

Energy - the changing climate, 2000
This report advocates a transformation in the use of energy in the UK to counter climate change. Success would necessitate a reversal of the previous trend of growing energy use. The report explores what this will mean for industry and households, and highlights how government policies need to change.
