Towards sustainable transport planning, 1997
Examines how the concept of sustainability has been interpreted in transport and environmental policy at the European, national and local level. This book will be of interest to planners, transport professionals, policy makers, geographers, and environmentalists who are interested in how the rhetoric of policy is translated into practice and how a more sustainable transport planning approach can be developed.

Report 377 Transport and buildings - the environmental impact, 1999
This report provides guidance on the location, design and operation of buildings for planners, designers, facilities managers and corporate managers who would like to share these benefits and to reduce air pollution, pressure on resources and traffic congestion. The project also generated a range of. benchmarks of good and typical practice for transport-related energy and emissions. The benchmarks relate to three typical building locations: a capital city, a major city, and an out-of-town or rural location. Designers, developers, facilities managers and planners can use these benchmarks to set transport targets for new build or refurbished developments.

Daylight is an essential component of a visually attractive and energy efficient atrium building. However, the atrium itself needs enough light for circulation purposes and to sustain plant growth, good control of electric lighting is vital for energy efficiency, and areas surrounding the atrium can suffer from poor penetration of natural light unless care is taken in design. Solar shading also needs to be considered. This paper explains the issues involved and gives guidance.

Report 343 BRE Guide to radon remedial measures in existing dwellings. Dwellings with cellars and basements, 1998
This guide is one of a series giving practical advice on methods of reducing radon levels in existing dwellings. It is intended to help surveyors, builders and householders who are trying to reduce indoor radon levels in houses with cellars or basements. The guide is based on a large body of remedial work carried out to advice given by BRE, and on discussions with others working in the field. The measures it describes are applicable, in principle, to all dwellings and other buildings of a similar scale and construction which have cellars or basements. Basements and cellars are relatively uncommon in the United Kingdom but where they do occur they are likely to be major contributors to the radon problem within a building. Experience shows that most houses with high indoor radon levels can be remedied through the use of straightforward building works. These can be carried out by a builder or householder competent in DIY. The cost should not be excessive.
