Late in 2008, the long-awaited Planning Bill finally received Royal Assent.
The news should transform the construction industry and give greater certainty about which projects will go ahead. It means less risk and more accurate business planning. Now, decisions on projects considered to be of national importance will be made by an Infrastructure Planning Commission.
It will take decisions on key infrastructure, such as energy projects, ports, road and rail schemes, aviation, water supply and wastewater treatment and waste.
In this programme we take a look at the likely effect of the Planning Act, take a look back at where planning has been, where it is now – and where things might go in the future.
