Video: The Manual for Streets
The Manual for Streets was published in 2007 as a long-overdue replacement for Design Bulletin 32 and its companion guide Places, Streets and Movement.
It's designed to complement Planning Policy Statement 3 relating to housing – putting well-designed residential streets at the heart of sustainable communities. The intention is to take away the focus from streets dominated by motor vehicles.
The Manual has been designed to demonstrate the benefits that flow from good design – assigning in particular a higher priority to pedestrians and cyclists.
This programme looks at the overall context of the Manual for Streets, the design principles behind it and the key detailed design issues covered in the Manual.
