Code for Sustainable Homes – Water

This programme takes a look at how sustainable water use is assessed under the Code for Sustainable Homes. The main areas of the Code concerning water use are outlined, while the 'mandatory minimum standards' of water consumption are related to Code Levels. The programme explains how the Code's compliance levels for water use are based on hypothetical values rather than actual ones, and clarifies how, although assessment by the Code is mandatory, compliance is not currently a requirement. Definitions of 'potable' and 'wholesome' water are given, as are reasons for the elevated importance of water conservation compared to other categories in the Code. The actual difficulty of achieving the Code's water consumption levels is discussed, while external water conservation is addressed with reference to water harvesting. The programme also places the issue of water conservation in the wider context of the Code, including its relationship with the old EcoHomes system and relevant changes to the anticipated new Approved Document Part G.
