Getting on top of green roofs

The concept of green (or vegetated or living) roofs is far from a new one. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were of their time a green roof system where terrace structures were built over arched stone beams and waterproofed with layers of reeds and thick tar on which plants and trees were gown in soil.

Green roofs in Iceland and Norway have been around for centuries, the general European trend towards green roofs started in Germany in the 1960s. Today the concept is common throughout much of mainland Europe and in some cases supported by grants and/or Federal Law.

There are numerous advantages to be derived from the development of Green Roofs. These include a positive effect on the environment and the encouragement of wildlife. The programme discusses the physical requirements for the introduction of effective green roofs and the standards that need to be followed.
