Health and Safety

Designing for safer roadsides

In 2007 nearly 3,000 people were killed and 27,000 people were injured on the UK’s roads. Nearly twenty per cent of those deaths involved single vehicle accidents where a vehicle loses control, leaves the carriageway and hits a roadside object such as a tree, wall, steel signpost or lighting column. However where vehicle crash safety has improved considerably, crash safety of the roadside environment is a comparatively new development.

This programme looks at the 'passively safe' crash-friendly roadside features, such as lightweight sign posts and columns that offer a much lower risk of personal injury when struck by a vehicle, that are now being installed alongside many of our roads.
