Abstract

Offers design guidance for achieving a safe and secure environment for Schools, covering aspects of generic environmental and physical crime prevention. Examines in detail aspects of building location, perimeter security and entrances, vehicle parking and access, access within the school site, external issues include landscaping and furniture, natural surveillance, temporary classrooms, sports facilities and wind turbines, photovoltaic installations and biomass boilers. Also encompasses storage facilities, utility services and mail delivery, building shell, internal layout issues and security lighting.

Now known as the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC). The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) existed until 31 March 2015, as an independent professional body coordinating the development of the police service in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The ACPO formed the Crime Prevention Initiatives to manage projects such as Secured by Design, which was established in 1989 and focussed on providing design guidance and security for new and refurbished homes, commercial premises and car parks.
