Special Publication SP 51 Design for openings in the webs of composite beams

Publication Year

1987

Document Status

Withdrawn

Abstract

Deals with the design of simply-supported composite beams with rectangular openings in the webs. The beams comprise steel I-sections and concrete slabs with steel decking as permanent formwork. Design is based on plastic analysis of the cross-section, considering the moment transfer by Vierendeel action across the opening. A relatively straightforward method of analysis is presented and this is summarised in a step-by-step approach. Comparison with available test data shows that the method is conservative but reasonably accurate. The method can also be used for non-composite and notched beams.

Document History

This is a jointly published document also by the Steel Construction Institute. Superseded by Publication P355 Design of composite beams with large web openings (SCI, 2011).
