Abstract

Examines the causes, effects, risks and offers guidance on early-age thermal cracking in concrete. This phenomena happens when tensile strain is greater than the tensile strain capacity of concrete. Considers design aspects such as estimating the magnitude of crack-inducing strain, how to control the size of cracks using reinforcement and ways to minimise risk.

Reprinted 2011 to make a correction to 2007 errata. Reprinted 2009 to incorporate an errata issued February 2007. Replaces CIRIA Report R 91, Early-age thermal crack control in concrete (revised edition), 1992. It is not possible to include the spreadsheet calculators containing worked examples which are available in an accompanying CD-ROM within The Construction Information Service. However appendices A1 - A10 are included within this pdf.
