This programme will explore various soil types and strata build-ups. While it focuses on the London area, the issues apply generally across the country (and more widely). It explains some of the conditions shown on soil maps, introduces the benefits and problems of working on wet, clay and chalky soils, and explains some key terms and concepts, including the 'Soil Moisture Deficit'. The programme also looks at the ground conditions encountered during the extension of the Jubilee Line (London Underground), and explains how the Leaning Tower of Pisa was stabilised.
