NBS Create and Contractors
NBS Create is based upon the Uniclass 2 classification system - a different classification system to other NBS specification writing tools which are based on CAWS. Uniclass classification structures the project information to the recognised standard in the construction industry, a key requirement for compatibility with BIM now and in the future. Though the structure and form of an NBS Create specification may differ from specifications written with other NBS tools, the content is in fact very similar.
The key to navigating a specification produced with NBS Create is understanding the structure of the content. The clauses are arranged as a series of systems and products which are grouped into categorised sections.
Each system comprises of a system outline clause which sets out its basic structure, a number of product clauses which specify the products and materials from their associated sections, together with the performance, execution and completion clauses that are required to facilitate that system. Clauses have a specific clause reference number within each system or product section. The numbering follows a common format and describes the Uniclass2 classification and the type of clause.
Products however do not follow the same Uniclass classification as the parent system sections which use them; they are linked within the NBS Create software and digital outputs. This enables products to be shared across a number of system sections, and means that NBS Create users do not need to enter and maintain similar clauses in multiple locations.
For example, the same clause describing an insulation product may be used in a masonry system and a roof system, NBS Create and the Uniclass2 classification system allows for this clause to be linked between the two systems.
The output specification can be structured and presented in two ways; by system or by section. The system structure groups all of the system performance, product, execution and completion clauses together within their systems. The section structure groups clauses based on the section classification. In this output the product clauses are grouped separate from the relevant system sections which utilise them and show ‘used by’ text within each clause to indicate which systems the product clause relates.
A specification structured by section may be shorter than the equivalent system output as linked clauses used by multiple systems are not repeated, however it will involve more cross referencing to determine the system that uses each product.
An NBS Create specification .pdf includes hyperlinks embedded within the document to allow users to quickly navigate to linked clauses quickly without needing to refer to the contents page.
