Penny Hydraulics is an award-winning UK manufacturer of lifting equipment. The manufacturer significantly contributed to the comprehensive redevelopment of Inner Temple's Treasury Building, Library, and Hall under Project Pegasus in alliance with Sir Robert McAlpine and Imtech.

Blending Tradition with Modernity

As one of London's four esteemed Inns of Court, the Inner Temple, established in 1506, required a delicate touch during its refurbishment. Penny Hydraulics embarked on a mission to integrate advanced raising and lowering systems without disturbing the site's historical essence. This began with assessing the Inner Temple's antiquated chandelier winches for The Engineering Practice, balancing modern functionality with the site's timeless elegance.

The manufacturer's initial analysis revealed the existing winches' non-compliance with current safety standards. Rising to the challenge, Penny Hydraulics designed and implemented ten custom electric winch systems, enabling safe, single-operator control of the valuable chandeliers for routine upkeep.

These systems, installed remotely in a plant room, were integrated seamlessly within the complex MEP layout. This was crucial to preserve the Inner Temple's historic decorative elements, particularly its ornate plasterwork.

Ongoing Support: Commitment to Excellence

Following installation, the focus shifted to ensuring the longevity and reliability of these systems. Penny's first maintenance check post-installation confirmed their excellent condition, demonstrating the manufacturer's dedication to quality and respect for the site's historical integrity.

"NBS Source's reputation for hosting quality products and providing detailed, up-to-date technical information aligns perfectly with Penny Hydraulics' commitment to excellence and innovation in our bespoke lifting solutions.

"This collaboration ensures that our products are showcased in an environment that appreciates and understands the value of high-quality, tailored engineering solutions."

Elevating Service: Custom Goods Lift Integration

The project's scope was further extended to include a custom Goods Lift. Building on Penny Hydraulics' past achievement with a Cellar Lift in 2011, the manufacturer was tasked with installing a larger lift for efficient kitchen logistics and waste management. The custom-designed MezzPro lift was strategically fitted within the building's unique lightwell and stairwell, requiring inventive installation techniques and precise manufacturing to adapt to the existing structure.

Completed in August 2021, the lift featured a 1300mm x 1500mm platform, a travel length of 4.5m, and a 500kg capacity specifically tailored to suit the site's specific needs and constraints.

Project Pegasus is a testament to Penny Hydraulics’ expertise in integrating cutting-edge engineering solutions while respecting and preserving historical sites. The manufacturer's involvement in the Inner Temple project highlights its proficiency in managing complex tasks with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a blend of modern functionality with historical reverence.
