Sketching Strata SE1

STRATA SE1 is the tallest residential tower in Britain, standing 147 metres 40 storeys from ground level to the top of the roof structure. This programme takes a look at the setting of Strata SE1 and its structure, engineered by WSP.

The lead engineer talks through via the medium of hand sketching the key elements of the building: the foundations and exposed pile heads; the walking columns (for which this building won an award); and the wind loading.

Key learning:

  • Structural loads and load transfers
  • Value engineering and cost-effective construction
  • Wind loading, suction and eddies
  • The function and air-permeability of the external cladding
  • Historic architectural development and new urban proposals for Elephant and Castle
