Video: Mumbai Sea Link Bridge
The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is India's first bridge to be constructed on open sea conditions. Part of the Western Freeway Sea Project – a larger scheme to improve the road network of greater Mumbai – the bridge is 4.7km long, weighs 670,000 metric tonnes, and supports a dual carriageway of four lanes in each direction. It comprises pre-stressed concrete viaduct sections at either end, and two cable stayed sections in its centre, one of which is the largest cable-stayed span in India. This programme is a technical case study of the construction of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, exploring the key engineering challenges with help from civil engineer, Andreas Faessler, surveyor Len Gower, and project manager Colonel Satish Diwanji. The programme also provides some basic theory on suspension and cable stayed bridges, as well as an introduction to Mumbai and the need for engineering solutions there.
