Remote Sensing: Photogrammetry and Laser Scanning

Using graphics and location footage, we explain how both laser scanning and photogrammetry produce similar results using very different technologies. In its most basic form, the latter requires two DSLR cameras and some 3D technology, whereas the former requires the creation of a point cloud by an expensive laser unit.

With the use of examples, the programme explains how the raw data is converted into different end products, including CAD line drawings, topographical maps and increasingly, impressive looking 3D fly-throughs.

Our contributors explain the differences between the two tools in terms of accuracy, speed, cost and flexibility, and consider the types of survey best suited to each application.
