Protected views – 3D mapping

Developers and architects are no strangers to planning constraints when it comes to realising their creative visions. Most constraints relating to policy boundaries, such as national parks or contaminated land, are two-dimensional. These can be clearly delineated in development plans with mapped extents – so they can be readily understood and accommodated.

But one constraint – protected views – is less straightforward. Also called protected vistas or designated views, they are not usually conventionally mapped. What is more, they are often described in a messy and complicated fashion – which is not easy to interpret. In order to overcome these problems, a creative approach that identifies and models the impact of protected views on a site, in three dimensions, has been developed.

We look at a mapped database of views and show how the mapping resource can be used easily and quickly to establish whether a development site is near to viewing corridors of protected views, and if so, how modelling techniques can be used to determine the true impact of the proposed development on the protected view.
