Video: Infrastructure planning
With a view to overcoming the delays affecting the construction of nationally significant infrastructure, the Government's 2008 Planning Act aims to introduce a new, simpler planning system.
The new system covers major energy generation, railways, ports, major roads, airports and water and waste infrastructure projects.
Under the new system, national policy is to be set out in a series of National Policy Statements and a new body, the Infrastructure Planning Commission, will oversee applications based on the criteria set out in the Policy Statements.
The professional engineering community, under the banner 'Engineering the Future', has been unanimous in its support for the first of those Policy Statements.
This programme takes a look at the National Policy Statements and the new Infrastructure Planning Commission.
