Ashmolean Museum Creative Wayfinding

The refurbished Ashmolean Museum opened to the public in November 2009. The new extension has doubled the museum's usable space but remains hidden behind the original neo-classical facade. Internally, it has radically changed the museum's appearance and how its exhibits are displayed. The separate, subject-specific rooms of the old museum have been replaced by open sided galleries, bridges and glazed displays, providing glimpses of distant objects in other areas of the museum. This is intended to improve visitor wayfinding and highlight connections between different civilizations, as part of the exhibition strategy, Crossing Cultures – Crossing Time.

This programme explores the refurbished Ashmolean Museum, outlining the museum's history, considering how the new structure integrates with the old, and explaining how layout and services have been arranged to create greater exhibition space. The programme focuses on visitor wayfinding, which is considered in the contexts of a more integrated display strategy and the changing role of public museums.
