Video: Global water security – an engineering perspective
Unchecked growth in water use could ultimately destabilise the UK economy; that is the warning from a report published by an alliance of leading engineering bodies, including the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Global water security – an engineering perspective outlines how over two thirds of the UK's water use is effectively imported in the form of water used to grow and process, and transport food, clothes and energy.
For example, the amount of water used to produce 1 kilogramme of beef is 15,500 litres, a t-shirt 2,700 litres, and 1 kilogramme of wheat 1,500 litres.
Of course, it is up to engineers to find solutions to these problems, and in this programme, we are going to take at look at some of the key findings of the report.
