TalkBack: Ruth Reed, RIBA President

In this interview, Ruth Reed discusses her forthcoming two years as President of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the challenges of promoting architecture during a recession. Reed intends a change of emphasis from the previous incumbent (the immediate past-President, Sunand Prasad, who will continue to work on the issue of climate change) by focusing on the delivery of better performing buildings in terms of sustainability, cultural and social value, and design. Reed discusses her leadership style and states her intention to give architects a greater sense of ownership of the RIBA. With a background in teaching, Reed explains her aims for architecture education in the UK, hoping to combine existing high standards of conceptual architecture with improvements in delivery skills. The likely impact of the upcoming General Election upon architecture is speculated upon. The main themes of Ruth Reed's RIBA Manifesto are then discussed, with a particular focus upon smart energy meters, minimum design standards, and minimum space standards. Ruth also talks through her intentions for design review panels in the planning process, and discusses her aims to streamline the regulation of building at design and approval stages.
