Code for Sustainable Homes – Ecology

This programme explains the workings of Category 9 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, 'Ecology'. It starts by taking a look at what the subject of ecology is, how it informs environmental expertise, and how it differs from (and relates to) environmentalism. In the 'Ecology' category, there are nine Code for Sustainable Homes credits available, each of which is discussed in turn. There are explanations of the 'ecological value' of a site and what comprises an enhancement to it, as well as what is meant by 'protecting ecological features'. Typical species densities are given for different landscape types, and the Code's ecological 'building footprint' is discussed. The programme also looks at the role ecologists play in assessing building performance under the Code, outlining the criteria in the brief for which an ecologist should be employed and what professional and relevant qualifications they should have.
