Surveyors – Contamination, the Environment and Sustainability

Contaminated land, environmental issues and a growing pressure to operate more sustainably present a web of inextricably linked challenges to the owners, occupiers, and developers of land and buildings. As a result, these stakeholders need to secure the best advice in order to understand: their environmental duties and liabilities; how to determine and quantify liability; the implications for asset management arising from any liabilities; who to look to for advice and how advisors should be appointed; the steps to take to minimise or eliminate liability; and the likelihood of ongoing, new or potential liability.

It is usually the chartered surveyor who is approached and is commercially best placed to provide this advice. In reality, however, most surveyors do not have the specialist skills needed to comment on all of these elements. So, how can surveyors ensure they operate within the scope of their expertise, within their professional indemnity insurance and (not forgetting) the law? In this programme, we consider the environmental arena and introduce the RICS’ new Guidance Note on the subject.
