Video: Engineering a recovery
With opinion divided over the effectiveness of the economic recovery, this programme provides a timely investigation into the current state of the engineering industry and considers its outlook for 2010. The situation is discussed in the light of the industry's contraction (the Civil Engineering Contractor's Association predicts 40,000 fewer civil engineering jobs – that's one third fewer jobs – by the end of this year compared to 2007), the UK's £180 billion budget deficit and expected public sector cuts.
The programme considers which engineering sectors are likely to benefit from the Infrastructure Planning Commission; whether SMEs (Smaller-to-Medium Enterprises) will lose out, and what small practices can do to improve business opportunities. The programme also looks at the role of professional institutions and the media in aiding engineering practitioners, while attempts to reinvigorate the economy through large-scale infrastructure building are weighed up against targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
