In the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami, the RICS' 'Mind the Gap!' report highlighted the role chartered surveyors could play in providing short term relief to disaster zones and how their help could be converted into long term reconstruction.
We examine the RICS' attempt to combine the work of aid agencies with the technical expertise of built environment professionals through its BuildAction initiative and discuss the realities of working in regions hit by natural disasters.
The programme also raises difficult political questions in terms of where to draw the line between the provision of necessary aid and the dangers of creating a dependency culture in the affected zone or country.
