Video: The drive towards low-carbon construction
The introduction of the Climate Change Act 2008 has committed the UK to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to 80% of 1990 levels by 2050, while the Carbon Reduction Commitment (scheduled for late 2009) will introduce a statutory carbon emission trading scheme for organisations consuming above a certain level of energy. This programme looks at these two pieces of legislation, the intentions underlying them, and their likely impact upon the construction industry. Policies and measures which have emerged to deliver the targets in the Climate Change Act (including Energy Performance Certificates, Landfill Tax, Renewable Energy Obligations, the Code for Sustainable Homes, and the forthcoming Code for Sustainable Non-Domestic Buildings) are each explained and their likely effect upon construction outlined. The industry's readiness for the implementation of this carbon reduction legislation is also examined.
