NBS Guide: Embodied Carbon Calculations

Learn how to align your carbon assessments with BIM workflows. This guide to Embodied Carbon Calculations, developed by NBS and Circular Ecology, sets out a practical, standardised approach to calculating the embodied carbon of building materials and products, and how to apply this data to BIM objects.

About the guide

The NBS Guide to Embodied Carbon Calculations is a free resource which aims to enable designers and manufacturers to make consistent, transparent carbon decisions from early design onwards.

The guide establishes a clear, repeatable method for carbon calculations and explains how to apply this to a range of BIM object types, from simple materials to assemblies (such as wall build-ups) and complex multi-material systems.

It will also help you understand the importance of clear assumptions, declared units and recognised data sources to creating credible carbon reports.

What's included?

  • How to apply A1–A3 embodied carbon factors accurately across different BIM object types.
  • How density, declared units, and geometry influence carbon values and why they matter.
  • Where to find reliable emissions factors and how to use them.
  • How to calculate A4 transport and A5 installation emissions using industry aligned methods.
  • How to structure BIM object properties for consistent and auditable carbon reporting.
