The Construction Leaders’ Summit: Building Better

At NBS, we're committed to providing the construction industry with the tools and resources needed to help build a better and more sustainable future. 

As part of this commitment, we held The Construction Leaders' Summit: Building Better, on Wednesday 29th September.

The one-day online event was for anyone involved in the design, supply, and construction of the built environment, looking to learn about and discuss the future of construction and how we can help improve it.

The event brought together leading figures from the construction industry who focused on building a more sustainable future and the digital tools and working practices needed to achieve this.

The Rt. Hon. Claire O'Neill
Managing Director, Climate and Energy at World Business Council for Sustainable Development

Claire Perry O’Neill served as a UK Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth. In 2019 she brought forward the country’s Net Zero legislation and led the UK’s winning bid to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). She served as COP26 President-Designate until she left politics in 2020. Claire is now the Managing Director for Climate and Energy at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. WBCSD has been the leading voice for business sustainability for over 25 years.

David Philp 
Digital Consulting, Strategy and Innovation Director - AECOM, Europe

David is a Chartered Construction Manager by background and Director for Digital Consulting, Strategy and Innovation at AECOM. He was seconded in the UK Cabinet Office in 2011 as Head of BIM Implementation and has been a key contributor to the UK public sector BIM mandate (GCS 2011-2016) and continues to support through his role as Impact Director at the Construction Innovation Hub. He was also seconded into the Scottish Future Trust (SFT) as Chair of the Scottish BIM Delivery Group. Additionally, David is Vice Chair of the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre.

Julie Hirigoyen
Chief Executive, UK Green Building Council

Julie joined UKGBC as CEO in 2015. Julie and UKGBC  galvanized industry support for a net zero carbon legislative target in 2019, and influenced government policy at both national and local levels on a range of impact areas including net zero carbon, biodiversity net gain, climate resilience, and waste and resources strategy. Julie is a Commissioner on the London Sustainable Development Commission. She also Chairs the Igloo Footprint Advisory Board, and sits on both the Green Construction Board and Grimshaw’s Stewardship Group. Most recently she was appointed as a Trustee of the purpose-driven charity Blueprint for Better Business.

Paul Morrell OBE
Former UK Government’s Chief Construction Adviser

Paul is a chartered quantity surveyor and was formerly senior partner of Davis Langdon (now part of Aecom). He was subsequently appointed as the Government's first Chief Construction Adviser with a brief to champion a more coordinated approach to affordable, sustainable construction, and it was in that role that he announced the Government’s BIM mandate in 2010. He now practises as an independent consultant.

Dr Hywel Davies
Technical Director of CIBSE / Chair of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee

Hywel leads the technical and policy development work of the Institution, particularly focused on those policy areas that influence the performance of buildings, including Building and Energy related Regulations and Building Information Modelling. He participates in a range of government and industry policy development groups. CIBSE members are familiar with his monthly contribution on legal issues for the CIBSE Journal. He is also engaged in research projects on technical and policy issues, particularly energy efficiency, BIM and other regulatory matters.

Dr Mark Bew MBE
Chairman at PCSG

Mark is a Chartered Engineer with a PhD in the digital prediction of social outcomes through the built environment. He has a track record of delivering successful process and technology driven business change programmes from within the Engineering and Construction industry. These include the development of Building Information Modelling (BIM) standards and the integration of engineering and commercial systems. He chaired the development of the UK Government BIM Strategy which was published in July 2011. Mark was awarded an MBE in 2011 for services to construction.

Jane Anderson
Director, ConstructionLCA Limited

Jane has over 20 years’ experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Embodied Carbon and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for the construction industry. She has provided consultancy around this to Welsh Government and the European Commission, and reviewed projects for BSI, RICS, CIBSE and WRAP. She has written guidance on Embodied Carbon for Woodknowledge Wales, ASBP, Construction Products Association, CIRIA and WRAP. She represents the UK in the development of European and International standards for EPD and Building LCA and acts as a verifier for several European EPD programmes including BRE.

Will Ardill
Technical Director at KSS

Will joined KSS as an architectural technologist in 2001, and having demonstrated his all-round abilities on a broad range of projects became a technical director of the practice in 2009. As well as focusing on construction information and specification writing for specific projects, he has a wider brief covering detailed design coordination, problem solving, supplier liaison and staff training. He is jointly responsible for quality assurance in respect to the technical output of the practice and leads the ongoing refinement of our BIM protocols and project information management.

Sarah Delany
Head of Classification, NBS

As Head of Classification at NBS, Sarah has nearly 45 years of construction industry experience as a building services engineer. For the past few years, she has been responsible for, and continues to manage, the development of the construction industry classification system, Uniclass 2015. She took on this role following the appointment of NBS to prepare a digital plan of works and classification system for the BIM task group, as part of the UK government’s BIM Level 2 tools. Sarah has actively collaborated with senior building and infrastructure experts throughout the construction and asset management industry to ensure Uniclass 2015 comprehensively covers the requirements of these sectors.

Dr Stephen Hamil
Innovation Director, NBS

Innovation Director at NBS, Stephen has played a big part in the developments of products such as NBS Chorus and NBS Source. He was the project lead for the development of the BIM Toolkit on behalf of the UK Government’s BIM Task Group and the Uniclass 2015 classification system was a major deliverable as part of this project.

Rachel Hoolahan
Architect and Sustainability Coordinator, Orms

Rachel Hoolahan is an architect and sustainability co-ordinator at Orms Architects. For the past few years, the practice has engaged in a series of deep research assignments and is utilising this data and knowledge to push the boundaries of sustainable development – both in refurbishment and new build projects. Recently, she led a research piece on material passports as part of a wider Grosvenor Estate Innovation Project into material reuse. The outcome of this work is a methodology for encouraging more meaningful material reuse, by creating a material database for the project. The approach is deliberately open source and flexible, allowing design teams of any size or skill set to apply the work to their projects.

Lee Jones
Head of Manufacturer Solutions, NBS

Lee has over 20 years’ experience in the manufacturing sector, predominantly working with building product manufacturers. Most recently before joining the NBS, Lee was the Digital Construction Manager at international sanitary ware firm ‘Ideal Standard’, where he was responsible for the digitalisation of the groups products, seeing them become leaders in the field of BIM and structured product data. Lee is also a qualified Mechanical Engineer and Architectural Technologist, holding a Masters’ Degree in Sustainable Architecture and Healthy Buildings.

Taleen Josefsson
Thrive Project Manager, Chetwoods

Taleen is an American-registered architect and Passive House Consultant who applies a holistic approach to tackling the complex environmental and social issues relating the built environment. She is devoted to promoting healthy, low-energy architectural solutions that strengthen local communities, economies, and biodiversity. Her most recent work includes research and publication on building material reuse as a method for reducing the industry’s negative environmental impact, with a proposed circular working method of “Form Follows Availability.” The research includes reviewing local waste streams, identifying and analysing potential building materials and their applications, and considering material life cycles and chemical contents.

Jade Lewis
Chief Executive, The Sustainable Energy Association

As Chief Executive of the Sustainable Energy Association Jade brings with her over 25 years of experience working in various roles in the construction product sector spanning technical sales, operations, quality management, R&D, and project leadership. For the last 10 years, she previously worked in Advocacy for Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland. As Director of Advocacy, she has built collaboration with the industry and government organisations to help inform the policymaking process. Jade’s efforts in engaging with policymakers has been dedicated to driving improvement in the performance of buildings to enhance the wellbeing of occupants and minimise the long-term impact of our built environment on the planet. Jade is also active in the Construction Leadership Council’s Innovation in Buildings workstream where she is helping to drive the uptake of smart construction in the house building industry.

Paul Swaddle
Head of Technical Solutions, NBS

Head of Technical Solutions at NBS, Paul has built a reputation for understanding world-leading companies; developing strong relationships, technical knowledge and consultancy. Paul is an industry 4.0 futurist, ARB-registered Architect, digital construction consultant, and technical author: co-writing “BIM for Dummies” for Wiley.

Richard Waterhouse
NBS

Richard is a Chartered Architect and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors. He is past President of the International Construction Information Society, past Chair of the British Standards B555 Committee on Building Information Modelling (BIM) and previously the Convenor of the European Standards WG1 on BIM Strategy

Allan Wilén
Economics Director, Glenigan

Glenigan is the trusted provider of UK and the Republic of Ireland of construction project sales leads, market analysis, forecasting, and company intelligence. Allan heads Glenigan’s market intelligence service. The research draws upon detailed analysis of Glenigan’s database of planned and active construction projects as well as other economic and market data sources. In addition Allan undertakes custom research and analysis for customers, including leading contractors, product manufacturers and government.
