The construction industry faces growing challenges when building on increasingly complex brownfield sites. Alongside the need for effective waterproofing, developers and contractors must now address a wider range of ground contaminants, including hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and hazardous ground gases, while maintaining programme efficiency and installation quality.
Against this backdrop, Visqueen has expanded its gas protection and waterproofing portfolio with the launch of Visqueen Ultimate Self Adhesive Membrane, a new hydrocarbon and VOC-resistant self-adhesive tanking membrane.
Developed as the latest addition to the Visqueen non-foil gas barrier range, the new membrane combines proven gas barrier and waterproofing performance to help specifiers address multiple site challenges with a single solution.
A solution for today's ground conditions
As land availability continues to tighten across the UK, brownfield development remains a key part of housing and regeneration strategies. While these sites offer significant opportunities, they often present environmental challenges that require careful consideration during the design and construction process.
Visqueen Ultimate Self Adhesive Membrane has been developed specifically to meet these demands. The membrane provides resistance to hazardous ground gases such as radon, methane and carbon dioxide. When installed with heat-welded laps, it also delivers hydrocarbon resistance and prevents the ingress of harmful levels of VOCs.
In addition, the membrane is suitable for use as a Type A Barrier Membrane (Tanking Membrane) in accordance with BS 8102:2022, the system is designed for both above- and below-ground applications, including basements, retaining walls and lift pits.
This combination of performance characteristics provides designers and contractors with greater confidence when delivering projects on contaminated or gas-affected land, helping to simplify specification and support long-term building performance.

Enhancing installation efficiency
While technical performance remains critical, on-site efficiency is equally important for modern construction projects. Visqueen Ultimate Self Adhesive Membrane has therefore been designed to make installation as straightforward as possible.
The membrane incorporates a self-adhesive application method, removing the need for jointing tapes and helping to streamline the installation process.
With a roll size of 1.5m x 15m, installers benefit from wider sheets and fewer on-site joints compared to other Visqueen self-adhesive tanking membranes, reducing labour requirements while supporting installation consistency across large areas.
The membrane works in conjunction with Visqueen Liquid Gas Membrane, which is used as the system primer.
The result is a system that not only delivers high levels of environmental protection but also helps contractors maintain productivity and programme certainty on site.
Supporting confidence from specification to installation
As construction projects become increasingly complex, the demand for reliable and technically-supported building protection systems continues to grow. Visqueen Ultimate Self Adhesive Membrane has been developed to help specifiers, contractors and developers address multiple environmental risks while simplifying installation and maintaining performance.
With resistance to groundwater, hazardous gases, hydrocarbons and VOCs, combined with the practical benefits of self-adhesive installation, Visqueen Ultimate Self Adhesive Membrane represents a significant evolution in structural waterproofing and gas protection technology.
As the industry continues to develop more challenging sites and navigate increasingly demanding environmental conditions, the new membrane provides an efficient solution that allows construction professionals to build with confidence.
