NBS launches its eighth annual National BIM Survey this week, and this year is looking to see how far BIM has now become “business as usual” for the design community.
The 2017 report from NBS highlighted an increasing frustration from construction professionals on the lack of clarity and enforcement by the Government of its own BIM Level 2 mandate.
With BIM awareness at near universal levels and BIM adoption steadily increasing year on year, the 2018 survey will be a good indicator on whether this perceived lack of support from Government will have a direct impact on this steady growth.
NBS Chief Executive, Richard Waterhouse, said: “The 2017 BIM report told us that although adopting BIM is not easy, it’s worth doing, and this is the story that we need to continue to tell; how BIM is improving client outcomes, as well as ROI for those in the design and construction sectors.”
As a vital resource for the UK construction industry and policy makers, the 2018 survey will once again be a sort after resource as the industry continues to strive for increased adoption and understanding of BIM and wider digital ways of working.

NBS and BDP join forces to improve generic carbon data in construction
Today, NBS (part of Hubexo), the platform for connected construction information, announces a long-term strategic partnership with BDP, a major global multidisciplinary practice of architects, designers, engineers and urbanists. The partnership recognises BDP's integral role in the development of NBS LCA, a new life-cycle carbon assessment platform providing professionals with high-quality, reliable and easy-to-use carbon data to ensure accurate tracking as construction projects evolve. BDP's primary contribution to NBS LCA has been the development of more than 1,300 pre-calculated generic assemblies, covering the most commonly used building fabric elements alongside key concrete and steel structural elements. These assemblies provide whole-element carbon data, giving designers consistent, UK-relevant carbon benchmarks from the earliest stages of project design. Users can easily and instantly apply carbon rates to a range of pre-configured common building elements, including walls, floors, and roofs. BDP also participated in collaborative workshops that directly informed the development of NBS LCA, helping to shape a tool that is practical, accessible and aligned with real-world UK construction workflows.
