BIM legal and contractual issues under the spotlight

BIM legal and contractual issues under the spotlight

Share your thoughts on legal and contractual issues in the latest UK BIM Alliance Survey.

The UK BIM Alliance is seeking to better understand the legal and contractual issues at the heart of BIM-enabled projects.

Contracts form the backbone of construction projects so ensuring they're meeting the changing needs and requirements of industry is of vital importance.

The industry is continuing to debate the correct procurement route and contract terms for these kinds of projects and get to grips with the legal risks and requirements that are brought about by BIM.

With BIM projects increasingly becoming the norm, following the mandated use of BIM Level 2 on all public-sector projects from 2016, this is a crucial issue for both the construction and legal communities. To this end, the Alliance's study - Overcoming the Legal and Contractual Barriers of BIM - is hoping to paint a picture of current practice and future industry needs.

The project team consists of May Winfield, in-house senior solicitor with Carillion, and Sarah Rock, senior associate in the construction and engineering team at Gowling WLG. Both have specialisms in BIM legal issues, deal with BIM in their daily work, and are regularly write and present on legal issues and BIM.

A comprehensive report, sharing the findings of the survey, and interviews, will be made available early next year.
