“Too many people are killed or injured in the construction industry each year, despite it being one of the largest industry sectors” – a statement from this year’s CIOB International Outstanding Achievement Award winner, Stefan Mordue.
Stefan, who works for Newcastle-based NBS, the UK’s leading provider of construction information and knowledge management services, fought off stiff competition from around the world to be awarded the accolade within the Health and Safety category.
The award win is a result of an ambitious and self-driven project to research and find practical solutions of how health and safety can be incorporated into the BIM environment – thus, the successfully published book ‘BIM for Construction Health and Safety’ was born.
“We’re all extremely proud of Stefan here at NBS and I would like to congratulate him again on achieving this very prestigious award,” said NBS chief executive Richard Waterhouse.
“Working to BIM standards provides multiple benefits to construction projects and those involved in them – reduced carbon emissions, collaboration and improved profit margins - but never before has someone taken the time to look at how it can create safer and healthier environments, something that has been driven by Stefan’s enthusiasm and passion for this topic.”
35-year-old Stefan receives his award along with his recent appointment to Vice Chair of the CIOB Digital Data Working Group.

The handy reference guide for students and practitioners alike shows how BIM can be used to explain and provide clarity on complex health and safety information, improving communication and enhancing standards with particular focus on the pre-construction stages - all geared towards a model for a zero-harm culture.
David Philp, AECOM Global BIM/MIC Consultancy Director, who nominated Stefan for this award, said: “His work and thought leadership within the industry groups that he represents and supports ensures that the conversation around BIM does not just centre on productivity gains or monetary values, but rather that it can make a meaningful contribution to the construction industry.
“Well done Stefan – a truly deserved achievement.”
Commenting on his success, Stefan said: “The fact that my work has been recognised by the CIOB and for it to be acknowledged alongside the achievements of the other 2016 winners, gives me great professional and personal satisfaction.
“I would describe myself as neither a BIM or health and safety expert, but rather just someone who has an interest in both areas and one who sees the true value of using the two in combination to create a safer industry. An industry which I hope my children will be proud of and one day hope to work in.”
Stefan who works for NBS as a Business Solutions Consultant, also represents the RIBA on the Architect’s Council of Europe BIM working group, co-authored ‘BIM for Dummies’ and is a founding member of the BIM2050 group.
