The UK’s first specification platform designed to support the next-gen of built environment professionals.

Leading construction data platform, NBS, has launched a version of its specification platform NBS Chorus, designed for universities and colleges.

NBS Chorus for Students and Teachers will enable the next generation of built environment professionals to study the latest specification approaches along with growing their competencies in specification writing.

The educational Chorus edition includes the entirety of the platform’s current content and unlimited licenses so that every student can access a ‘seat’. In addition, to foster a collaborative, multi-generational learning culture amongst users, the licence includes a programme of ‘train the trainer’ support.

Having access to Chorus, which is the market leading industry tool, will ensure that architectural and engineering graduates will be able to write safer, more efficient, more sustainable, and more accurate specifications, by using live product information and thus develop real-world industry skills.

Dr Paul Coates, Lecturer, at University of Salford said; “Learning through doing is a proven way to embed knowledge and now I can teach specification like this. Students can use Chorus while I’m teaching, and this allows them to really deepen their skill set.”

Dr Stephen Hamil, Innovation Director at NBS, said: “Developing the next generation is a core part of our remit at NBS, and education is all about equipping students with the tools they need for their careers. The evidence shows that safer, sustainable buildings start with robust specifications. Now, with the launch of Chorus for Students and Teachers, it will be much easier for students to learn how to write high quality specifications, and be confident they have the vital skills needed for when they start their careers.”

He adds “With NBS celebrating its 50th anniversary, this is one of our signature initiatives that we are confident will improve the future industry.”

NBS will also launch an NBS Academic Forum to provide specification educators with a place to share best practice and discuss the latest developments.

NBS and BDP join forces to improve generic carbon data in construction

Today, NBS (part of Hubexo), the platform for connected construction information, announces a long-term strategic partnership with BDP, a major global multidisciplinary practice of architects, designers, engineers and urbanists. The partnership recognises BDP's integral role in the development of NBS LCA, a new life-cycle carbon assessment platform providing professionals with high-quality, reliable and easy-to-use carbon data to ensure accurate tracking as construction projects evolve. BDP's primary contribution to NBS LCA has been the development of more than 1,300 pre-calculated generic assemblies, covering the most commonly used building fabric elements alongside key concrete and steel structural elements. These assemblies provide whole-element carbon data, giving designers consistent, UK-relevant carbon benchmarks from the earliest stages of project design. Users can easily and instantly apply carbon rates to a range of pre-configured common building elements, including walls, floors, and roofs. Developed by BDP and NBS, the assemblies remove the need for designers to manually build up material layers or calculate individual components at the concept stage. This saves significant time and effort, enabling proportionate and responsible carbon evaluation early in the design process, when decisions have the greatest impact on a project's overall carbon footprint. BDP also participated in collaborative workshops that directly informed the development of NBS LCA, helping to shape a tool that is practical, accessible and aligned with real-world UK construction workflows. These assemblies give designers a reliable, UK-relevant starting point for carbon assessment, without the burden of building everything from scratch. NBS LCA addresses this need by integrating carbon calculations with live design work, drawing on structured data from Circular Ecology's ICE Database and more than 12,500 verified, specification-ready construction products with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) from NBS Source and ECO Portal.
