NBS sponsor region’s newest super-school

One of the North East’s fastest growing and successful businesses has partnered with the new North East super school.

NBS has sponsored the auditorium at the North East Futures UTC, the new school for 14-19 year olds, which will open in the Stephenson Quarter, Newcastle, in September.

For the first academic year, the auditorium will become the NBS Auditorium where students will go for daily lectures in health sciences and digital technologies.

NBS has also pledged one of the highest numbers of mentors to the UTC, helping to meet their pledge to have one mentor for every student. Some 15 mentors from NBS will help to support a UTC student through their studies each year, helping them to better understand the construction technology sector, pass on skills and inspire and prepare them for the world of work.

NBS COO, Helen Whitfield, will be taking place on a newly formed recruitment and resources committee for the UTC that will focus on marketing and student recruitment.

Helen said: “As a business, NBS is fully supportive of, and indeed incredibly excited to be supporting the UTC. We are acutely aware that we need a skilled workforce in the future and this is one way we can ensure the next generation coming through are getting the best experience possible.

“The ambition of the UTC is to offer every pupil a mentor, and we are delighted to be able to help them achieve this. I’ve been overwhelmed by the support and passion from my NBS colleagues who have stepped up to get involved. There is so much value to be gained by this two-way learning and supportive relationship, the mentors have as much to learn from the mentees and I look forward to this value coming back into our business.”

NBS, who provide technical information, specification and BIM tools to construction industry professionals, will become a core partner along with the likes of the NHS, Sage, Ubisoft, the University of Sunderland, Accenture and Fujitsu.

Principal of the UTC, Dan Sydes said: “Thanks to NBS we now have a named auditorium for the opening in September. We look forward to working with NBS and building a partnership to provide the very best for our students.

“Health science and digital technology are two buoyant sectors in the North East and there is a huge opportunity for this region to continue its rapid growth in these areas by developing more skilled people. North East Futures UTC is about just that, so it’s in the interests of businesses in these sectors to support us, and of course, that will be a mutually beneficial relationship for the UTC and its students.”

The new school - adjacent to Newcastle Central Station - will deliver education that is grounded in hands-on experience, with opportunities for students to work closely with industry and to undertake placements with the big-name employers such as NBS.

The school welcomes students who are about to enter their Year 10 and Year 12 studies, giving young teenagers the chance to embark on their GCSEs at a specialist school, as well as providing an alternative to college or sixth form.

NBS and BDP join forces to improve generic carbon data in construction

Today, NBS (part of Hubexo), the platform for connected construction information, announces a long-term strategic partnership with BDP, a major global multidisciplinary practice of architects, designers, engineers and urbanists. The partnership recognises BDP's integral role in the development of NBS LCA, a new life-cycle carbon assessment platform providing professionals with high-quality, reliable and easy-to-use carbon data to ensure accurate tracking as construction projects evolve. BDP's primary contribution to NBS LCA has been the development of more than 1,300 pre-calculated generic assemblies, covering the most commonly used building fabric elements alongside key concrete and steel structural elements. These assemblies provide whole-element carbon data, giving designers consistent, UK-relevant carbon benchmarks from the earliest stages of project design. Users can easily and instantly apply carbon rates to a range of pre-configured common building elements, including walls, floors, and roofs. Developed by BDP and NBS, the assemblies remove the need for designers to manually build up material layers or calculate individual components at the concept stage. This saves significant time and effort, enabling proportionate and responsible carbon evaluation early in the design process, when decisions have the greatest impact on a project's overall carbon footprint. BDP also participated in collaborative workshops that directly informed the development of NBS LCA, helping to shape a tool that is practical, accessible and aligned with real-world UK construction workflows. Their depth of project experience and technical knowledge has directly shaped the generic assemblies at the heart of the platform. These assemblies give designers a reliable, UK-relevant starting point for carbon assessment, without the burden of building everything from scratch.
