Abstract

Mitigation is an integral part of the design and planning of a scheme. Some mitigation measures are inherently features of the road itself e.g. choice of vertical and horizontal alignment. The presence of other mitigation measures such as noise barriers can be separately identified. This section describes some of the general principles which should be followed in considering possible mitigation measures and there effectiveness. It should be remembered that some measures mitigate more than one effect. For example, bunds might well reduce visual intrusion as well as noise levels; planting can reduce visual effects for people and also benefit wildlife; balancing ponds can prevent the spread of polluted water, help to maintain the existing hydrological regime and create habitats for flora and fauna.
