Abstract
Describes the Hackney School of Food, a food education hub created by LEAP Federation of Schools and Chefs in Schools, designed by Surman Weston. The project repurposes a redundant school caretaker’s house into a specialist teaching kitchen for primary school children and the local community. A double-height space was created by removing the first floor, featuring height-adjustable cooking stations, exposed finishes, and robust materials to maximise educational value. The derelict gardens were transformed into productive growing spaces with outdoor cooking and dining areas, while a cheerful mural enhances the street-facing elevation. Flush-mounted induction hobs and wheelchair-accessible stations prioritise safety, inclusivity, and ease of use.
