Abstract
Examines the use of bio-based binders in asphalt as a means of reducing the carbon footprint associated with highway construction and maintenance, while maintaining the performance, durability, and whole-life value of pavement assets. It reviews the current state of industry practice, relevant specifications and standards, available bio-based materials, mix design considerations, installation trials, and the environmental benefits and challenges associated with replacing petroleum-derived bitumen with biomass-derived alternatives. The document concludes that bio-based binders offer promising carbon reduction opportunities, but highlights the need for robust quality assurance, environmental product declarations, and long-term performance monitoring to ensure that sustainability gains are not achieved at the expense of pavement longevity and asset resilience.
