Abstract

Describes the refurbishment of the Central Building (1963) at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, originally designed by Denys Lasdun as the social heart of the campus. The project focused on restoring the scalloped precast concrete lantern roof, upgrading insulation, ventilation, and waterproofing while maintaining the building’s operational use. Cullinan Studio, in collaboration with contractors and waterproofing specialists, developed a bespoke solution combining Sika Sarnafil's single-ply membrane, liquid-applied Sikalastic, and SikaFloor systems. Extensive testing ensured seamless integration, with Sarnametal specified for strong bonding and mastic joints carefully detailed for breathability and movement.
