Abstract
Describes the Stirling Prize-winning John Morden Centre, a day care and health facility for the Morden College retirement community in Blackheath, designed to enhance elderly living and social engagement. The building integrates arts spaces, a café, a library, and a medical centre, unifying previously dispersed facilities. A lightweight cloister connects brick pavilions beneath a steep zinc-clad roof, echoing the historic college’s cloisters and chimneys. Constructed with CLT insulated panels, the design promotes natural ventilation through brick chimneys and features a green roof to support biodiversity. Materials were selected to complement the Grade I-listed surroundings, blending traditional red brick with contemporary zinc roofing.
