Advisory Desk Note 540 Vertical shear resistance of composite slabs and anchorage
Publication Year
2025
Document Status

Abstract
This SCI Advisory Note discusses the vertical shear resistance in composite slabs, particularly in scenarios where heavy concentrated loads near supports may render vertical shear critical. It clarifies that while traditional designs assumed sufficient anchorage of steel sheeting and reinforcement, such assumptions may not always hold. The note outlines how vertical shear resistance is calculated per BS EN 1994-1-1 and EN 1992-1-1, focusing on the effective contribution of anchored tensile reinforcement. It also highlights how second-generation Eurocode 4 provisions account for additional resistance from steel sheeting, including shear buckling and web crushing, even when anchorage is limited—ultimately supporting the continued validity of current design assumptions.
