Abstract

The Ray Dolby Centre is the new home of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, designed by Jestico + Whiles to serve as a national hub for physics research and education. Replacing outdated 1970s facilities, the building spans 32,900m² and houses 173 laboratories, cleanrooms, workshops, and collaborative spaces. Its outward-facing design promotes public engagement with science, anchored by a quadruple-height atrium that showcases research activity. The architecture reflects a sense of permanence and timelessness through robust materials and a form driven by function. Includes: Project data section, Project description, Specification description, Architect’s view section, Architect’s choices, Selected products. Architect: Jestico + Whiles.
