Abstract

Traces the development of lighting technology, and the use of daylight in buildings, from the mid 1950’s up to the present day. The author argues throughout the book that ever more widespread integral use of daylighting and artificial lighting within structures has mirrored the development of modern buildings. While earlier buildings made little use of natural light, the innovative designs and materials of modern structures allow the idea of combining artificial and natural lighting schemes to be realised. The book is divided into two distinct parts. Part I explores the philosophy of the design process, whilst Part II devotes itself to exploring more than 50 case studies on the illumination of modern buildings.
