Abstract

Recognition of the location and extent of movements in building materials and components is essential for the satisfactory design of joints and fixings and the prevention of cracking. This is particularly important with regard to long-term performance and the avoidance of excessive maintenance. This digest is intended primarily as a source of data on the physical characteristics of building materials needed to assess their movements, or the stresses resulting from restrained movements, due to changes in temperature and moisture content. It also includes elementary methods for assessing the extent of these effects but does not deal with the practical consequences of movements in particular parts of buildings. It is published in three parts: Part 1 (Digest 227) discusses movements, their sources and design strategies for accommodating them, and the causes of deformation and stress: Part 2 (Digest 228) is an analysis of thermal and moisture effects and includes tabulated data needed to assess the change of size and shape of materials: this part gives guidance on estimating deformations and associated forces and stresses.
