Report R 164 Design of containment systems for the prevention of water pollution from industrial incidents

Publication Year

1997

Document Status

Withdrawn

Abstract

Industrial sites which manufacture, handle or store hazardous substances have the potential to cause pollution of surface and groundwater if these substances are released into the environment. Incidents which can cause release of hazardous substances include fire and runoff of associated firefighting water, spillage during handling, failure of primary containment and vandalism. Once released, hazardous substances can enter the water environment through surface or foul drainage systems, by direct runoff into a water course or by infiltration into the ground. Secondary containment systems provide protection in the event of loss of containment of materials which could cause water pollution. This report will guide the reader to the most appropriate secondary containment system. As well as detailed technical advice on the planning, design and construction of the various containment system options the report contains guidance to help designers choose the appropriate type and capacity of system with reference to assessed risk.
