Planning Policy Statement 16 Tourism

Abstract

Sets out the Department's planning policies for tourism development and also for the safeguarding of tourism assets. Seeks to manage the provision of sustainable and high quality tourism developments in appropriate locations within the built and natural environment. Also embodies the Government's commitment to sustainable development and to the conservation of biodiversity.

Document History

Will be cancelled by Strategic planning policy statement for Northern Ireland (SPPS) - planning for sustainable development (DOENI, 2015) when all eleven councils have adopted a new Plan Strategy for the whole of their council area. Supersedes Tourism Policies SP10 and TOU 1 to TOU 4 of the Planning strategy for rural Northern Ireland (PSRNI) (DOENI, 1993). Also supersedes Coastal Policies CO 5, CO 6 and CO 7 of PSRNI and also those elements of the remaining coastal policies insofar as they relate to tourism development or the protection of tourism assets from inappropriate development. Additionally, also supersedes policy CTY 1 of PPS 21: Sustainable development in the countryside (DOENI, 2010) as it relates to the tourism policies of PSRNI.
